Little takes the luster out of a house like stale, drab colors. To keep a house feeling vibrant, even white, beige and off white walls need to be touched up. Painting your walls a new color is one way to add more zest to your home. But, painting the interior of your house takes lots of time.

Expensive and inexpensive steps to a more colorful home

You generally need to set aside five to six hours to paint a standard size room, and that's if you're a professional painter. Fortunately, there's a less time consuming path to a colorful  home. Artwork that's rich with color blasts is one way. Yet, artwork, especially original pieces that increase in value over time, start at several hundred dollars.

Color rich silk flowers is a third, less expensive and less time consuming path to a more colorful home. Have guests visiting in a few hours or one to two days? You could get silk flowers from your local department store. Choose an arrangement if you don't have experience creating eye popping floral arrangements.

Regarding color and design, here are a few tips to consider while shopping for beautiful silk flowers:

  • Go with floral arrangements that highlight outdoor seasons. For example, during spring, you can get silk flower arrangements that are rich with pinks, greens, whites and yellows. You could go with more greens, blues, purples and reds during autumn and winter.
  • Pay attention to lesser seen flowers. In other words, don't always go for roses and tulips. Carnations, buttercups, daffodil and amaryllis work wonders.
  • Opt for a vase that has the texture and design that sets off the flowers, the furniture and artwork at your house.
  • Clean silk floral arrangements twice a year, at the least before you store arrangements that are no longer in season. Regular cleanings keep colors in silk flowers vibrant.
  • Narrow to mid-size vases work well on end tables while long, broad vases fit well across coffee tables.
  • Wooden vases give silk flowers a greater natural look and feel.
  • Check out floral wholesale shops if you're feeling creative and want to design your own silk floral arrangement. You could also work with an online creative to get a customized arrangement. It might surprise you how much a customized colorful silk floral arrangement adds to your home, especially if you or a friend create the arrangement.
  • Don't feel pressed to add green stems to silk floral arrangements. Lack of green can create a more empowering color blasts.

Place a colorful arrangement in each room of your house, adding a different color to each room. You, your entire family and guests will appreciate it. After all, the human eye can detect about 10 million colors. Each color can affect how a person feels.

Be open to adding two to three or more new colors to your house each year. You'll have more options if you focus on color tones. Light blues, medium purples and spicy reds are only a start.

Accent walls can really tie a room together.  If done properly, they can balance out narrow rooms, provide a conversation piece, and add an artistic flair to an otherwise drab room.  However, there are a few do's and don'ts that must be kept in mind if you are to make the best decision regarding exactly which wall in a room should be chosen, and what the best colors are for your particular choice. If you are choosing to paint an accent wall in a narrow room, then keep some basic color theory in mind.  Warm hues like reds, yellows, and oranges will draw focus to  a wall, effectively creating the illusion of being "drawn toward" the color.  Therefore, if you were to paint the shortest wall farthest way from the entrance a bright red, then it will appear that the room isn't as narrow as it once was.  However, if you were to choose one of the longer walls, it would only serve to make the room appear even narrower than it once was. In contrast, cool hues like blues, purples, and greens can have quite a different effect.  Cool hues tend to draw one's gaze away from a wall, thereby making a room or area look larger than it really is.  These colors can serve to make short rooms appear longer, skinny rooms appear wider, and hallways appear more spacious. Next, we'll talk about natural lighting.  Warm hues work best in northern and eastern-facing rooms, as the amount of light that these are getting will be significantly less than the amount of light coming into your southern and eastern-facing rooms.  Save the cool hues for the brightest rooms. Visibility of your accent wall is another big factor to consider.  If you are painting a smaller wall, then decorate sparsely.  You don't want decorations or furniture cluttering up your accent wall and preventing it from doing its job.  Working with your architecture is also important.  If you have an irregularly-shaped wall in a room, then try if you can to make it your accent wall.

Painting the interior of your home is an inexpensive way of increasing its value. It improves the overall look of your home, while adding style and allure. It is not uncommon with residential home owners to take on this task themselves.  Do it yourself projects such as painting can be fun, while saving money at the same time.  The following outline will help you get started. Have a clear picture Having a clear picture of what you want the end result to look like is very important. Visit each room in the house and note the look and feel you desire for each area.  Keep in mind that the new wall color should coordinate with the current  furnishings in each room. Assuming you are painting the home for resale, keep the colors neutral, and consistent throughout the house. Discuss with others Talk with all the members of your household, and share your painting plans with them. Ask for their ideas, discuss your choice of colors, and listen to their input. It is important to be open to new ideas, you never know who might come up with the perfect solution to a problem area. Calculate Paint Needed At this stage, you need to determine the area to be covered and the quantity of paint required to completely cover each area. You need to take into consideration how many coats of paint will be needed to produce your desired finish on each wall.  Estimating the amount of paint needed is quite simple. Measure the height of the wall and multiply it by the length. This will give you the area to be painted. Calculate the area of windows and doors present on each wall and subtract it from the overall area. Make Your Budget The price of paint varies depending on the quality.  A professional can best guide you to  the type of paint and the finish that will best meet your needs.  You will also need to allow money in your budget for the equipment needed to complete your painting project.  Much like the paint, the quality and price will vary on items such as brushes, rollers, painter's tape and drop cloths.  Again, a professional can recommend how to best utilize your equipment budget. Planning and Preparation Planning is key, it is best to estimate how long the job will take before you get started. You will need to plan your household activities around your painting schedule.  Leave a little extra time in your work schedule for those unforeseen circumstances to avoid over whelming yourself. Clear the room:

  • Remove all furniture from the room to be painted, clearing out as much as possible. For rooms that have very heavy furniture, move them to the center of the room and cover them with a drop cloth to avoid accidental paint spills/spatters.
Wall preparation:
  • Prior to painting, walls need to be prepared.  Use a scraper to remove old paint or a steamer to remove old wallpaper.  Holes should be filled and the wall surface made smooth.  Seek the guidance of a professional on how to best prepare the surface of your walls as the technique will vary based on the construction of the wall.  Tape off the trim work around the doors, windows and flooring, and use drop cloths to protect the carpet and floors.
Prime the wall:
  • The purpose of priming is to prepare the wall for the application of paint.  Priming covers irregularities and stains, making the paint adhere to the wall much more effectively. Priming makes the surface uniform for the application of the new paint,  basically giving the painter a clean canvas to start with.
Start painting: When you are ready to paint, it's recommended to start in the more difficult areas or larger rooms first.  Apply paint consistently with even vertical strokes of a brush or roller. Be certain to complete a wall before moving on to another area to help ensure the paint dries evenly. Observe as you go how well the paint is covering and drying.  This will help you to determine how many coats of paint you will need to apply to achieve the look you desire. Once the painting is done, the equipment put away and the furniture back in place, you can sit back and admire a job well done.
